Plantronics Ships More Than 1 Million Xbox Live Headsets

Popularity Points to Growing Role of Voice in Gaming; Plantronics Undertakes Initiative to Expand Leadership in Gaming Market

SANTA CRUZ, CA - August 5, 2004 – Plantronics (NYSE:PLT), the world leader in lightweight communications headsets, today announced it has shipped more than 1 million headsets to Microsoft for the Xbox Live™ online gaming service since product shipments began in late 2002. The milestone underscores the growing role that Plantronics plays in delivering voice to enhance the gaming experience. Shipped with the Xbox Communicator™, the Plantronics-manufactured and designed headset delivers superior audio so gamers can take advantage of voice-enabled games, and communicate with other players around the world via the popular Xbox Live service from Microsoft Corporation.

Plantronics’ Xbox Live headset brings voice to a new level, further enabling the increasingly social aspects of online gaming. The headset allows players to use voice to coordinate strategy with team members, “trash talk” opponents and issue game commands. The product leverages Plantronics’ more than 40 years’ expertise in mission-critical headset design and development for NASA, 911 dispatch centers and others to provide the “battle-tested” durability, reliability and high-quality audio that today’s gamers demand.

“We see tremendous opportunity in the gaming market and believe that the popularity of the Xbox Live headset is just one indicator of how successful we can be in growing our leadership position,” said Matt Miller, director of product marketing, Plantronics. “With the combination of increased adoption of online gaming through services like Xbox Live and our headset’s crystal clear audio, we’re able to deliver the most intense gaming experience possible.”

Plantronics has already made several moves to expand its leadership in gaming and in the consumer market overall. The company has strengthened its consumer marketing team and significantly expanded its product design team, while simultaneously integrating its focus on customer research and technology innovation.

While the Xbox Live headset is Plantronics’ first offering for online console gaming, the company staked an early claim in the gaming market overall with the introduction of its multimedia stereo headset for the PC market in 1999. Today Plantronics is a leading provider of gaming headsets, offering a growing family of products that includes the best-selling .Audio 90 and the DSP-500 for PC gaming, as well as the Xbox Live headset for console gamers. Plantronics is also innovating in the area of design by developing a variety of wearing options, which allow players to ‘suit up’ in the headset that reflects their individual gaming style.

“Voice is an integral part of the ultimate gaming experience that Xbox Live brings to users,” said Todd Holmdahl, General Manager, Xbox Hardware. “Plantronics helps deliver excellent communications capabilities with the superior audio, great design and durability that our users want. We are looking forward to an ongoing relationship with Plantronics and to seeing the company continue to develop more innovative, high-quality products for the gaming market.”
