Public Vote Redefines Today’s Remote Worker

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. –– November 18, 2008 –– Plantronics, Inc. (NYSE: PLT) today announced that “cloudworker” won the nationwide Plantronics TeleWho? contest. The contest was created to coin a new, more accurate and relevant term for professionals who work beyond the office.

According to the winning submission, “a cloudworker is somebody who uses on-demand technology and collaboration tools, such as unified communications, to work anywhere and anytime, and uses the resulting freedom to enable a my-size-fits-me career path and lifestyle. The metaphor of the cloud extends well beyond cloud computing and software as a service applications to include work environments, distributed teams, and communication tools.”

Today, telecommuting means much more than it did in 1973 when the term was born. It’s no longer just about replacing a daily office commute with telecommunication links. Rather, it now involves working from several locations in one day, including from home; communicating on multiple devices and with multiple applications; integrating work and personal life; and providing 24×7, “always on”, service to customers.

For the Plantronics TeleWho? Contest, a panel of telecommuting and workplace experts – including analysts, media and bloggers – selected 10 finalists from a pool of approximately 500 submissions. These 10 were selected based on their originality, relevance and lasting impact. Public online voting took place over a two-week period, and nearly 2,200 votes were cast. Cloudworker won with 27.5% of the vote.

Venkatesh Rao, a blogger at www.ribbonfarm.com and research scientist at a Fortune 500 company who divides his time between Rochester, N.Y. and Washington, D.C., submitted the winning term. For his creativity and ingenuity, he will be receiving approximately $2,000 in communication and audio entertainment prizes.

“I’ve been blogging about and researching the future of work for a while now, and personally living the cloudworker lifestyle for years, but I didn’t think to put a name to it until I saw the Plantronics contest,” said Rao. “It is amazing how changing a single word can completely reframe how you think about a big subject. Once I started thinking in terms of ‘cloudworker,’ so many ideas came flooding into my head that I ended up starting a series of blog articles, which my readers really seem to resonate with. I hope the word triggers an equally stimulating shift in perspective for others.”

Honorable Mentions
The open submission process resulted in a wide variety of terms. Although they didn’t make the final cut, the panel awarded the title of “honorable mention” to a few of the most original entries.

The honor of Most Likely to Cause Confusion goes to “Porta-Pro” submitted by Jillian Grant of Sunnyside, N.Y. Though most immediately associate “porta” with another hyphenated word, the term submitted is an abbreviation for portable professional.

Several submissions referred to one of the least mentioned benefits of working from home, but quite likely one of the most appealing. Thus, Most Tell-it-like-it-is Truthful goes to “Robe Warrior” submitted by Faith Zack of Santa Cruz, Calif.

Cloudworking on the Rise
A survey conducted by TNS and released by Plantronics today reveals that high travel costs are transforming how businesses and their employees communicate and collaborate. In fact, 52% of survey respondents work from home at least one day a week and almost half cite “saving money” as the primary reason. Combined with the current economic climate, businesses can also reduce real estate and operational costs by encouraging employees to work outside of the traditional office environment.

New Calisto Pro Home Phone with Multi-function Bluetooth Headset Simplifies Landline, VoIP and Mobile Phone Conversations

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.– August 23, 2007 – Plantronics, Inc. (NYSE: PLT) today introduced Calisto™ Pro Series, a revolutionary home phone with a multi-function Bluetooth® headset that greatly simplifies and enhances voice communications for home professionals. Leveraging more than 40 years of communications and ergonomic expertise, Calisto Pro’s intuitive design and hands-free capabilities introduce an entirely new way to manage landline, mobile and VoIP conversations.

“As traditional and new voice technologies converge in the home office, home professionals can benefit from ‘bridge’ solutions that centralize and simplify communications,” said Merle Sandler, senior analyst, SMB and Home Office Programs, IDC. “The vast majority of households have landline and cell phones and VoIP adoption is growing, so a phone that can easily orchestrate all three will resonate with the growing home professional segment.”

IDC estimates that there are currently approximately 37 million home office households in the US.

Stay Connected Hands-Free, Anywhere

The Plantronics Calisto Pro features a compact landline handset and multi-function Bluetooth headset nested in a clean, elegant charging base. The headset enables home professionals to switch between landline, mobile phone and VoIP calls at the touch of a button. No longer burdened with the cumbersome task of cradling a phone between the neck and shoulder, users can talk hands-free and accomplish simultaneous tasks that fill the work day, from reaching for an important file to signing for a package at the front door while on a long conference call.

The handset is built on digitally encrypted, voice-dedicated DECT™ 6.0 technology to provide exceptional audio clarity and performance that is free from interference with other home devices, such as WiFi and microwaves. It provides up to 300 feet of roaming range, a built-in speakerphone and flip-up waist clip for on-the-go dialing and Caller ID viewing.

The headset combines a robust noise-canceling microphone and an extended boom to greatly reduce background noise. The headset can be connected to both the handset and a mobile phone to easily answer both landline and mobile calls. Home professionals can also use the Calisto Pro headset with their Bluetooth mobile phone while on the road, and it will automatically reconnect with the home phone upon their return.

Internet Calls Made Easy

Perfect for home professionals who use Internet calling to save on phone bills, Calisto Pro includes a USB port for PC connection. Skype® and Yahoo!® Voice calls are transferred to the Calisto Pro headset at the touch of a button, allowing home professionals to remotely answer and end conversations from up to 300 feet away from the base station. The headset’s long boom is designed to enhance VoIP call quality by significantly reducing the risk of echo.

Calisto Pro also enables professionals to easily transfer 200 Microsoft Outlook® contacts, with up to three numbers each, into the handset, ensuring that important business associates are easily accessible.

“Home professionals are trying to gain control of the constant juggling of telephony devices and of business and personal responsibilities at home,” said Joyce Shimizu, vice president and general manager, Home and Home Office at Plantronics. “With Calisto Pro, users are better able to simplify their lives through intuitive, natural communications and hands-free mobility — and do so with the quality and performance that professionals expect from Plantronics.”

Pricing and Availability

Plantronics Calisto Pro has a MSRP of US $279.95 and will be available online at Office Depot, Office Max, Staples and The Sharper Image in September. It will also be available at The Sharper Image stores nationwide in September and in select US Office Depot, Office Max and Staples stores starting in October.

Headsets Provide Hands-Free Mobility for Cordless Phone Users

Santa Cruz, Calif.– October 27, 2005 – Plantronics, Inc. (NYSE: PLT) today announced two new headsets designed for the growing number of home office workers, as well as time-pressed moms at home. Optimized to provide hands-free conversations in noisy, busy home environments, the new Plantronics M210C and M214C ensure that users are heard loud and clear, and offer simple compatibility with virtually all cordless phones.

The new headsets provide affordable voice communication tools and a productive work-at-home experience for America’s growing number of home office workers — currently estimated at 44 million people*. Both the Plantronics M210C and M214C models offer a hands-free solution so that anyone at home — including moms juggling multiple activities — can manage a successful work-life balance while staying connected with colleagues, clients, friends and family.

“When I’m on the phone with my M214C headset with the handy mute button, I now have the confidence that if something noisy suddenly happens in the background — like my kids coming home from school — my clients won’t even know about it,” said Pam Ferguson, owner of Marketing Minds, a home-based marketing firm and mother of two. “Maintaining a professional image is critical, regardless of whether I’m working at home or not.”

“Using a simple, affordable headset at home can make a big difference in lifestyle,” said Joyce Shimizu, vice president of Plantronics’ Home and Home Office Business Group. “Users are now free to email, cook dinner or pay bills while talking on the phone — seemingly adding more minutes to their days.”

The market is primed for headsets designed specifically for cordless phones. Approximately 66 percent of homes use a cordless phone and 72 percent of those phones have a jack for headset use, according to a survey conducted by Synovate in September 2005.

Sound Quality and Comfort
The new M210C and M214C headsets provide cordless phone users superior reliability and sound quality — particularly with the unique Microphone Adjust Switch, a critical feature built into all of Plantronics’ cordless phone headsets, that automatically optimizes sound for cordless phones.

The M214C headset provides a noise-canceling microphone to minimize ambient noise, as well as one-touch mute control. Both the M210C and M214C models offer adjustable over-the-head headbands for a comfortable and secure fit for long wear, as well as an adjustable, flexible microphone boom.

The M210C and M214C headsets are part of the Plantronics cordless phone headset family that simply plug into standard headset jacks. The products are priced at a suggested retail price of $24.95 to $34.95, respectively, and are available today at Best Buy and Staples stores nationwide as well as www.plantronics.com.

New DA40 Adapter Provides Enterprise-Class Communications to Softphones; Speeds VoIP Infrastructure Transition and Return on Investment

Santa Cruz, Calif.– October 26, 2005 – Plantronics, Inc. (NYSE: PLT) today expanded its growing family of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) headset solutions with the DA40, a USB-to-headset adapter that enables enterprises to quickly optimize existing headsets for use with softphones. The DA40 helps companies realize the full benefits of VoIP communications with outstanding sound quality and reliability.

“There is no doubt that VoIP in the enterprise is now the standard for communications — PBX lines are going the way of the dinosaur,” said William Stofega, research manager, VoIP Services at IDC. “Whether companies are installing hardphones, softphones or both throughout the organization, headsets play an integral role in developing a successful VoIP infrastructure that optimizes voice communications.”

Plantronics’ family of VoIP headset solutions helps enterprises minimize implementation costs and realize a quicker return on investment. For example, with the DA40, companies that have recently migrated to a VoIP infrastructure and now utilize softphones can continue to use their professional series Plantronics headsets.

A Legacy of Communications Expertise
Plantronics has a long legacy of developing high quality headset solutions across numerous infrastructures and for numerous applications. By understanding what to deliver and receive in the VoIP network and managing specific audio parameters, including transmit and receive quality, side tone management, distortion and acoustic echo, Plantronics continues to develop products that operate optimally and intelligently within VoIP infrastructures.

One-of-a-Kind System Delivers Remote Call Answer/End

LOS ANGELES, CA - Internet Telephony Conference & Expo – October 5, 2004 – VoIP users gain unprecedented mobility and wireless freedom with the Plantronics CS50-USB, the industry’s only wireless USB headset system to deliver call answer/end capability and remote ring detection. Leveraging Plantronics’ successful CS50 wireless headset system for the office, the CS50-USB allows users to roam up to 200 feet from their PC softphones without missing calls.

“VoIP provides simple, portable and cost-effective telephony service, but until now, lacked mobility. The CS50-USB delivers wireless connectivity allowing users to take and end calls away from their desks and computers,” said Joe McGrogan, director of product marketing for Plantronics. “Plantronics worked with its OEM softphone partners to develop PerSonoCall™, the CS50-USB’s software that provides the answer/end and ring detect capability for most major softphones.”

Plantronics is showcasing the CS50-USB at the Internet Telephony Conference & Expo, booth #901, held in Los Angeles this week.

The CS50-USB is backed by a one-year warranty and has an MSRP of US$299.99. It will be available in the U.S. and Canada in December 2004, and at www.plantronics.com. In other regions of the world, the CS60-USB variant will be available on the same day.

SANTA CRUZ, CA. - March 18, 2004 – Plantronics, the world leader in communications headsets, today announced the SupraPlus headset, the new standard in performance, reliability and all-day wearing comfort for contact center and office professionals. The SupraPlus™ telephone headset family leverages the strength of the market-leading Supra® models and introduces Plantronics’ next generation of durable, comfortable corded headsets. SupraPlus headsets also feature a modern design to match today’s style preferences.

Utilizing more than 40 years of headset design and audio expertise, Plantronics designed SupraPlus from the ground up, expanding on the classic corded headset style and functionality. SupraPlus improves on Plantronics’ popular corded headset line by incorporating new features, such as enhanced receive-side audio quality, intelligent flexible boom and improved stability, into a contemporary design.

With its wider receive-side frequency response curve, SupraPlus provides optimal listening intelligibility, which in turn reduces miscommunications and frustration for both parties on the call. SupraPlus provides excellent audio quality for traditional voice applications as well as the increasingly popular Voice over IP softphone applications.

“Our success over the years with Supra, the most popular headset in the world, gave us great insight into real user needs,” said Peter Zan, senior product marketing manager for Plantronics. “Contact center and office professionals who need a durable headset that can handle the demands of everyday, all-day usage also want it to be comfortable, as well as have a stylish design that reflects their professional image. We developed the SupraPlus to meet this challenge, providing the style and substance they require.”

Specifications, Pricing and Availability

The SupraPlus telephone headset family allows users to select the model that best suits their needs. SupraPlus is available in monaural or binaural models, and offers either noise-canceling or voice tube microphones. The noise-canceling model features an intelligent bendable boom that keeps the microphone properly aligned, even when bent, to permit clear, accurate conversations.

SupraPlus supports Plantronics’ H-Series and Polaris configurations and is compatible with all Plantronics amplifiers, USB-to-headset adapters, and headset-ready phones and agent consoles.

The SupraPlus monaural voice tube model is available now. The other SupraPlus models will be available in early spring 2004 from Plantronics’ distributors and at www.plantronics.com. The H-Series voice tube and noise-canceling models have an MSRP of US$79 – $120; the Polaris voice tube and noise-canceling models have an MSRP of US$115 - $164.
Communicate Up to 300 Feet from an Office Phone with 8 Hours of Secure Talk Time

SANTA CRUZ, CA - November 25, 2003 – Plantronics (NYSE:PLT), the world leader in lightweight communications headsets, untethers office professionals from their desks with the release of the CS50 Wireless Headset System, a completely wireless digital headset system. Plantronics’ CS50 enables a hands-free workstyle that suits the needs of today’s busy professionals, enhancing their freedom and efficiency.

The sleek, self-contained design of the wireless CS50 addresses the number one product concern of business professionals who have chosen not to use a headset—they don’t want to be tied to their desk or have a wire in the way (Plantronics study, 2002). With the CS50, office professionals can communicate up to 300 feet away from their desk phone, for up to eight hours. The lightweight headset also uses built-in digital encryption so conversations are secure.

“In a fast-paced, people-powered business like ours, the phone is a powerful and indispensable tool. The CS50 has greatly improved my department’s accessibility and productivity,” said Adam Keen, vice president of special projects for MGM and United Artists. “The CS50’s combination of mobility and comfort enables us to multitask much more effectively. Also, unanswered calls are now a rarity, which means there’s less chance we’ll miss out on something important.”

The CS50’s wireless mobility gives businesses an important competitive advantage. Most workspace is unoccupied for 60% of the workday, and every day more than 70% of business calls are missed (UNWIRED, 2003). This means that valuable time is lost exchanging voicemails. The CS50 effectively reduces phone tag, letting users roam hundreds of feet from their desks and, with the addition of the optional HL10 handset lifter, answer and end calls remotely. In addition, because the CS50 is as intuitive and easy to use as answering the phone, the learning curve is minimal.

“The key to a useful wireless headset product is that it not only needs to be easy to use, but it needs to have the capability to answer and end calls even when you are well out of reach of the phone,” said Rob Enderle, Principal Analyst for the Enderle Group. “Plantronics’ CS50 not only meets that requirement better than any other device, I believe that it has the potential to be the most indispensable new telephony product in the modern executive’s office.”

With the CS50, office professionals gain a powerful set of benefits, including:

Increased productivity and convenience: Office professionals now have the freedom to carry on conversations up to 300 feet from their office phones using a lightweight, sleek and completely wireless headset.

Reliable and long-lasting: The CS50 provides up to eight hours of continuous talk time with no worries about dropping calls halfway through the conversation.

Plug-and-Play: The CS50 works with existing office or PBX phone systems, whether analog, digital, single-line or multi-line.

Crystal clear and secure communications: Plantronics’ more than 40-year legacy of voice expertise ensures superior sound quality with a noise-canceling microphone that eliminates background sound. To keep conversations secure, the CS50 uses digital 900 MHz transmission to digitally encrypt conversations.

Users also can satisfy their individual style and comfort preferences while gaining additional convenience and functionality with optional accessories. Professionals can customize their CS50 units with a HL10 handset lifter for one-touch call answer/end, a behind-the-head neckband, which provides another style option for personal comfort, and a wall- or desk-mountable in-use indicator that lets others know the user is on a call.

“There’s a huge, unmet need for mobility in the workplace. Out of more than 43 million office professionals, only about 9% currently use headsets,” said Peter Zan, senior product marketing manager at Plantronics. “With the Plantronics CS50, office professionals gain the wireless freedom they need for multitasking, while enjoying increased productivity. The CS50 enables users to move around the office while still communicating effectively.”

System Requirements, Pricing and Availability

The Plantronics CS50 is compatible with standard office phone or PBX systems, and works with analog, digital, single-line or multi-line telephones. Weighing only 26 grams, the CS50 headset comes with three different earloop sizes and an over-the-head band for customizable comfort and style.

The Plantronics CS50 is backed by a one-year warranty and has an MSRP of US$299. The optional HL10 lifter has an MSRP of US$79. The CS50 and HL10 have begun shipping and will be available from U.S. and Canadian distributors and retailers, and at www.plantronics.com.

DA60 USB-to-Headset Adapter and PerSono Pro 2.0 Software Deliver Enhanced Comfort and Control in Call Centers

BOSTON, MA - Fall VON - September 22, 2003 – Plantronics (NYSE:PLT), the world leader in lightweight communications headsets, today extended its technology leadership with the launch of the DA60, a powerful digital voice platform for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) softphones. The Plantronics DA60 combines a digital USB-to-headset adapter with the PerSono Pro 2.0 software application, which is designed for call centers and provides unparalleled control over voice communications. The DA60 is the latest in a series of Plantronics products that bring the power of voice communications to the enterprise, office and consumer.

Building on more than 40 years of voice technology expertise, Plantronics worked with call center managers, supervisors, agents and key OEM softphone developers to design the DA60, which includes a powerful set of hardware and software features to support softphone applications, including:

Digital signal processing (DSP) and Call Clarity™ technology to enhance audio quality and suppress echo;

A USB-compatible adapter for simple plug-and-play installation;

PerSono Pro 2.0 software, with preset profiles and individual agent settings;

Supervisor control over agent settings;

Continuous decibel monitoring of agents’ exposure to loudness levels; and

Increased screen security when agents leave their stations.

“Customer care centers are beginning to understand the benefits of IP technology, particularly in centers of 250 or fewer seats where IP deployments are starting to gain traction,” said Paul Stockford, chief analyst for Saddletree Research. “While there are still some technology issues to be overcome, many of these issues are being addressed by solutions such as the DA60. Plantronics’ digital voice platform addresses problems such as echo and latency and brings voice clarity up to par with traditional telecommunications solutions. This is a significant development in the drive toward growing IP deployments in the customer care center,” Stockford added.

Clear Conversations for Increased Productivity

The digital clarity of the Plantronics DA60 helps agents quickly understand and respond to customers without having to repeat themselves. Less repetition means shorter calls, allowing agents to increase their productivity by handling more customers per shift. For customers, clearer conversations and shorter calls translate into a better overall experience.

To enhance agent comfort and consistency, PerSono Pro 2.0 features preset profiles for every Plantronics professional headset. Through a simple onscreen menu, agents select the headset they use, and immediately all settings are optimized for that model. Agents can still adjust listening and microphone volumes to suit their personal comfort levels, as well as monitor audio levels via onscreen meters.

Understanding market requirements has been key in the DA60’s development. Because call center agents and managers need the flexibility to share or rotate stations, PerSono Pro 2.0 stores settings on the network, so agents can retrieve their own settings wherever they’re assigned.

The DA60 also includes a patented security feature to protect sensitive information if an agent needs to leave his or her station. Once an agent disengages the headset’s Quick Disconnect™ feature, PerSono Pro 2.0 activates Windows’ password-protect mode so that no unauthorized person has access to customers’ financial data or personal details.

For supervisors, PerSono Pro 2.0 gives remote control over all system features so they can enable or disable agent settings individually or across a workgroup to promote consistent audio quality. Supervisors can also monitor continuous decibel agent exposure to accumulated loudness levels over time to maintain a safe, comfortable working environment that meets OSHA standards.

“With the DA60, Plantronics has clearly established its leadership in delivering next generation digital audio for the call center,” said Craig May, senior vice president, marketing, product development and technology. “The DA60 represents an intersection of technology and application where we’ve tailored the technology to address the specific needs of a market, in this case the call center. Moreover, the DA60 is a platform product that clearly lends itself to future extensions.”

System Requirement, Pricing and Availability

The Plantronics DA60 is compatible with all USB-enabled PCs running Windows 2000/XP. The adapter is plug-and-play—one end plugs into a PC USB port, letting agents connect the other end to any Plantronics professional headset. The adapter also includes inline mute and volume controls that are linked to the PerSono Pro 2.0 software, so changes to volume and mute are shown on screen.

The Plantronics DA60 is backed by a two-year warranty and has an MSRP of $US150. The DA60 will be available in the fall from Plantronics distributors worldwide and at www.plantronics.com.

The DA60 with PerSono Pro 2.0 will be demonstrated in Plantronics’ booth #605 at Fall Voice On the Net (VON), being held this week in Boston, MA.

SANTA CRUZ, CA - May 27, 2003 – Juggling home, work and family life just got a little easier with Plantronics’ new CT12 cordless headset telephone. The Plantronics CT12 is a single-line digital 2.4 GHz cordless headset telephone that brings the ultimate in hands-free convenience and hassle-free communications to the home and home-office. People no longer have to stop what they’re doing to talk on the phone. Instead, they can take and make calls from almost anywhere in their home or home-office while leaving both hands free to cook a meal, answer the door or type on a computer.

Plantronics’ CT12 includes an ultra-compact remote unit, charging base and a 2-in-1 convertible headset. The headset marks the introduction of Plantronics’ newest patented innovation, Firefly™, a flashing red in-use indicator light at the tip of the headset boom that tells people when you’re on the phone. The headset also features a noise-canceling microphone for crystal clear conversations, and a 2-in-1 convertible design that can be worn either over the head or over the ear.

The ultra-compact remote unit fits in the palm of the hand and features a convenient belt/clothing clip that remains attached even while charging. The remote includes a backlit LCD for caller ID* and call waiting*, 5.5 hours of continuous talk time, 10-number speed dial and volume and mute controls. The Plantronics CT12 uses 2.4GHz Digital Spread Spectrum (DSS) technology to deliver increased calling range and digital security.

“We’re living in a world where people have to juggle more and more priorities. The CT12 helps make work and home life just a little bit easier,” said Matt Miller, director of product marketing. “Now people can comfortably carry on conversations, whether they’re typing on a computer or tying their kid’s shoes.”

The Plantronics CT12 Cordless Headset Telephone is available immediately in the U.S. and Canada from Plantronics distributors and selected retailers and at www.plantronics.com. The CT12 has an estimated retail price of US$129.99.
